OVERVIEW

THE ASK

Create a brand identity for The Olympic Games, set in a location where it has not already been held.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Creating and designing the winner’s medal, decorative patterning, Thailand Olympic mascot, creating a color palette, and iterating on the main logo font

CREATIVE EXECUTIONS

WINNER'S MEDAL

For the winner’s medal, I wanted to mix traditional Thai designs of lotus patterns with decorative, modern shapes and flourishes. The dual tone of gold and rose gold both adorning the medal’s front symbolizes and works in harmony, representative of how Thailand and its culture exists in synchronicity with nature.

Above was drawn, inked, and colored in Clip Studio Paint, mocked up in Photoshop by me

MASCOT

Chokh, meaning “fortune” in Thai.

Nagas, Sanskrit for snake/serpent, are serpentine guardian entities are believed to be protectors of Buddhism. They are a national symbol of Thailand.

Keeping in line with past Olympic mascots, I wanted to create a graphic iteration of the naga, that was simplified (as compared to traditional Thai art) and approachable.

Above was sketched in Clip Studio Paint, finished in Adobe Illustrator by me

PATTERN

Native to Thailand, sacred lotus flowers symbolize transcendence, purity, and faith—representing spiritual enlightenment for Buddhism in Thailand.

For the pattern, I wanted to balance soft, organic shapes found in nature, while keeping in mind the sharp, angular shapes present in traditional Thai art. Traditional Thai art is very calculated and mathematical, and I wanted to emulate this and keep the design very geometrical, in reference to existing Thai patterns.

Above pattern was made in Adobe Illustrator by me

Our passion is seen through our culture, our hospitality, love of life, and our vibrant spirit that pulsates through every aspect of Thailand

Thailand’s enchanting allure lies in its blend of vibrant traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and the warm hospitality of its people, creating a tapestry of wonder that mesmerizes all who experience the culture

To see nature flourish and our society at peace, harmony has always been at the core of our culture, fostering a deep sense of unity and tranquility that defines the essence of Thailand

FONTS

HEADLINE FONT - RECOLETA

Blending elements from popular typefaces from the 70’s, Recoleta uses the soft and delicate shapes of Cooper or Windsor with fluid, angled strokes. Familiar, yet fresh and modern, the font features slightly rounded and bulged ends, which we chose as a nod to the shapes of Thai script.

BODY FONT - NIRAMIT

Designed by Cadson Demak, the first Thai communication design firm to develop type design solutions, Niramit is a Thai and Latin font family featuring decorative details with a modern structure.

REFLECTIONS

DESIGN SUCCESSES

If I were to pick a design that I was most proud of in this project, I think I was successful in balancing shapes and linework in the floral pattern used throughout the branding and the medal design. I referenced important, natural shapes, while adding a modern spin on traditional, mathematical designs, and came away with designs that I am really proud of.

GOING FURTHER

Overall, while the ask was robust, I think I came away with a better sense of design and patterning, and further improved on creative execution. If I were to continue this project, I would ideally like to work on commemorative poster art and designing collectibles to better gain a sense of illustrative design work and physical product design.

But enough about me,

tell me about you!
